A surgical artist at war
After the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815 the military and local medical services were overwhelmed by the numbers of wounded British, French, Belgian, Dutch and German officers and soldiers brought to the city’s hospitals. Over the following weeks a number of London surgeons hurried to Brussels to treat the Waterloo casualties.

Among these London surgeons was Charles Bell a prominent Scottish doctor, an accomplished artist and an authority on anatomy. Bell executed paintings of many of the injured soldiers he saw in hospital.

Many of these paintings have now been published in this book with a fascinating commentary on the conditions shown, the history of the patients and of Bell himself. Included in the book are Bell’s earlier paintings of casualties from the Corunna campaign.
